The Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) is a rapidly growing institute within the office of the Vice Provost and Dean of Research at Stanford University. The mission of HAI is to advance AI research, education, policy and practice to improve the human condition. Led by faculty from multiple departments across Stanford, research focuses on developing AI technologies inspired by human intelligence; studying, forecasting and guiding the human and societal impact of AI; and designing and creating AI applications that augment human capabilities.

The Stanford Digital Economy Lab conducts groundbreaking research on the impact of the digital economy. We bring together an interdisciplinary group of passionate researchers to study how digital technologies are transforming work, organizations, and the economy. Our insights are helping companies, policymakers, students, and professionals rise to the challenges and opportunities created by digitization. The Lab is part of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) and co-sponsored by the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR).

We are looking for a data engineer to collaborate with members of the research teams at SDEL. In this role, the data engineer would design and implement data models that support specific analytic needs. This includes providing leadership in the areas of data modeling techniques that consider standards and best practices. Of special interest is appropriate tooling and methodologies that promote scalability, extensibility, and reuse.

This is a 2-Year Fixed Term position.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement databases and data pipelines to support the lab's research needs.
  • Develop and maintain machine learning models, including natural language processing models
  • Train other researchers in data management, GCP, machine learning, and NLP techniques
  • Conduct code review and ensure the quality of code developed by the lab members and research assistants
  • Work collaboratively with researchers and other members of the lab to ensure the timely completion of projects
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest developments in big data engineering and machine learning
  • Ensure efficient use of Cloud Credits across projects
  • Identify and assess potential data acquisitions
  • Contribute to technical discussions at a big picture level and provide feedback on decisions and interpretations.

Required Capabilities:

  • PhD, Master's degree, or Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience in software development and big data engineering
  • Strong programming skills in Python and experience with relational databases
  • Experience in developing and deploying machine learning models, particularly in NLP
  • Experience with cloud computing platforms (e.g. GCP, Azure, or AWS)
  • Familiarity with distributed computing frameworks (e.g. Hadoop, Spark)
  • Good communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously

This role is open to candidates anywhere in the United States. Stanford University has five Regional Pay Structures. The compensation for this position will be based on the location of the successful candidate.

The expected pay range for this position is $96,000 to $140,000 per annum.
