Job Description

SCM Group North America is seeking an Application Engineer to join our Digital Systems team. The Application Engineer serves as a software developer and develops expertise in SCM’s wide range of software systems, providing advanced support for first and third party machine and software integrations. This includes post processor development, support for third party post processor development, advanced level software integrations, and custom software design and development to provide complete automation solutions.

Essential Job Duties:

Reporting to the Digital Systems Manager, the person in this role will have responsibilities in multiple aspects of software development, integrations and customer support including but not limited to:

- Software application design, development, and integration:

  • Work with customers and sales team to gather and analyze system requirements and create project quotes, requirements, and project scope documents.
  • Design applications to fit the determined requirements, develop UML diagrams/documents, customer samples.
  • .Net, WPF, Windows Forms (C# + VBA) front-end UI development.
  • SQL, OPCUA, Kepware, XML, CSV back-end data intake development.
  • Back-end API integration with various CAD/CAM systems.
  • MSL Scripting (C#), XML, G-Code back-end data/machine program output.

- Use of 3D modeling software such as Fusion 360 to review and produce 3D models.

- Advanced CAD/CAM, MSL Scripting (C#), and G-Code programming, such as parametric part programming, macro development, scripting, and automation.

- Remote and on-site integration and testing of complete project requirements including the above tasks.

- Customer support/training for current and past automation projects.

- Modification of past automation projects in accordance with customer change orders.


  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or related discipline.
  • 1+ years relevant work experience in software applications development; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Programing experience in the following specific programming languages and ecosystems: Microsoft .Net, C#, VBA, WPF, WinForms, Lua, or similar OOP systems.
  • Familiarity with operating industrial manufacturing equipment and CNC machinery in a safe and efficient manner. (Familiarity with woodworking equipment preferred.)
  • Excellent customer service skills, pleasant telephone demeanor, active listening, communications skills both written and verbal.
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft office (Outlook, Excel, Word, etc.)
  • Must have full command of English language with ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical users.
  • Must have valid driver’s license, U.S. passport, and ability to travel throughout North America up to of the time and occasional international travel.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience developing CAD/CAM post processors, and/or working with CAD/CAM APIs to develop macros/automation.
  • Prior experience with industrial CNC machinery.
  • Prior experience in the wood manufacturing industry.
  • Prior experience in CAD/CAM programming, mechanical drawing, 3D modeling.
  • Prior experience creating documentation, recording screen captures, editing videos.

Physical Requirements:

  • Works in a combination of office setting, on on-site at customers.
  • Requires long periods of sitting at a desk and viewing a computer screen.
  • Requires ability to speak and fully understand the English language.
  • Regular periods of walking, standing, bending, etc.
  • Ability to lift 50lbs; reach and carry items of up to 15 lbs.
  • Occasional travel, with ability to drive, or take air transportation.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $60,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
