Lead Specialist, Mirth Integration and Technical Architect

Salary:$90,000 to $145,000
Position Summary:The Mirth Integration and Technical Architect Lead Specialist is responsible for designing and developing integration software using Mirth Connect in the APHL Informatics Messaging Services (AIMS) environment, an AWS cloud platform that facilitates messaging across public health entities.
This role requires extensive experience with Mirth Connect, a strong technical background in software development, experience in healthcare data integration including Health Level 7 (HL7) and use of coding standards such as LOINC and SNOMED, and deep knowledge of AWS tools and technologies. This position will collaborate with other Mirth Engineers and cross-functional technical teams to develop and implement innovative solutions leveraging industry best practices.
Finally, the Mirth Integration Specialist will provide technical leadership and guidance to other Mirth Integration developers, collaborating with stakeholders to define requirements, design data mapping and transformation solutions, and ensure the successful execution of data integration projects to support public health partners.
Duties Responsibilities:Data Integration:
- Develop data exchange solutions using Microservices and event-driven patterns
- Develop Mirth functions, routes, and maps to transform and translate messages
- Lead the effort for designing and coding APHL’s Electronic Test Order and Result (ETOR) solution to facilitate messaging between healthcare organizations and public health laboratories
- Maintain/improve the health coding translations (LOINC, SNOMED, CPT, Local Codes) between Mirth Connect and Clinical Architectures’ Symedical RESTful service
- Develop and/or manage Mirth connectors for AWS S3, SFTP, MLLP, SOAP, HTTPS, and other RESTful services
- Install and configure Mirth Connect
- Troubleshoot and fix any Mirth mapping issues for ETOR and other projects
- Develop, maintain and design education to orientate onboard customers to Mirth and related platform(s)
- Provide oversight and guidance to cross-functional teams in identifying areas of improvement within data integration processes and workflows
- Ensure adherence to industry standards and best practices in designing efficient data integration architecture and methodology
Architecture:
- Design and implement solutions that leverage AWS services such as S3, SQS, EventBridge, DynamoDB, and Lambda to improve data exchange scalability and resilience
- Design and develop AWS multi-AZ solutions that provide High-Availability data exchange infrastructure
- Develop metadata structures for tracking message flows for user dashboards
- Design performance testing processes and test plans to evaluate the scalability and robustness of data integration processes/tools
- Collaborate with infrastructure teams to identify potential performance bottlenecks and propose optimizations or infrastructure enhancements
Document Technical Specifications and Process Improvements:
- Develop technical documents, diagrams, standards, and guidelines relating to data exchange
- Maintain up-to-date documentation of data mappings, transformation rules, and integration workflows
- Create documentation of process improvements, lessons learned, and best practices to promote knowledge sharing and continuous improvement within the team
Employment Standards- Education and Experience:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
- BS/BA in Computer Science or some related subject with at least 7 - 10 years of work experience in software development is required
- 5+ years of hands-on experience with Mirth Connect (expert) is required
- Significant experience with AWS services including AWS S3, SQS, EventBridge, DynamoDB, and Lambda is required
- 3+ years of clinical messaging experience is required
- Proficiency in Java programming language and other programming languages (e.g., C, Java, Python, JavaScript)
- Familiarity with public health informatics including both laboratory and surveillance is desired
- Working knowledge of and experience with technologies such as Enterprise Integration (Orion Rhapsody, Cloverleaf) and database (Oracle, Microsoft) is desired
- Prior exposure to distributed application performance engineering, database design concepts, middleware concepts, and information security engineering is desired
- Experience with current Internet technologies, including SmartSheet, Google Docs, and Confluence is desired
- Experience with Jira is required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Software development and change control lifecycle knowledge is required
- Understanding of lab orders and results workflow is desired
- Health Information Technology/Electronic health records knowledge is desired (EMR/EHR, PACS, LIS, RIS, etc.)
- Hands-on experience using HL7 V2.X, FHIR, LOINC, and SNOMED is required
- Proficiency in application interface technologies and standards, including HL7, XSLT, RESTful APIs, JSON, XML, FHIR, CCD, CDA, etc., and other relevant protocols
- Ability to explain complex and technical solutions to a non-technical end-user is desired
- Ability to handle multiple priorities throughout periods of heavy workloads and tight deadlines is required
- Must have strong written and oral communication skills
- Must be adept at conducting research into project-related issues and products
APHL Weeks:: APHL Week is a Conference/Convention that is held at the APHL Home Office Bethesda, MD. This event is mandatory for all employees to attend.
