Undocumented SQLExpress Error when running "Patterns in Action"

I re-installed SQLExpress 2012 today and received the following when attempting to login to "Patterns in Action"

Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.

After ample head scratching and google'ing, I discovered the below...

You must remove the contents of the below path first, and then restart the application.

When restarting, SQLExpress will refresh the contents of the local server.

C:\Users\your_name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server Data\SQLEXPRESS
